Dio Tribute: This is Your Life

review by Steve Black

Ronnie James Dio was one of the biggest voices of his generation.

He died too soon leaving us in May of 2010, but he did leave behind a fine collection of musical treasures. I never did meet Ronnie, but I've been told countless times what a great guy he was. I did see Dio in concert five times and I'm grateful for those memories. This is Your Life is a tribute to Dio's music including his time in Rainbow, Black Sabbath and his solo career.

Whit any good cover song or "tribute" song if you want to call it that, you can either take the original idea of a song and take it in a totally different direction or play it true to it's original form, both examples are present in this collection.

My personal highlights from this collection include the Scorpions doing one of my favorite Rainbow tracks "Temple of the King", they played it as if it were a Scorpions song, in fact if you're not familiar with the song, you would never know it was a cover, it is that well done. I also love Halestorm's version of "Straight Through the Heart", The Black Sabbath track "Neon Knights" from Anthrax and although it is not exactly new the Killswitch Engage cover of "Holy Diver".

Other bands and musicians pay tribute to RJD include Metallica, who turn in a 3 song medley, Rob Halford, Corey Taylor and Motohead.
