A little coffee with your tequila? That's what Sammy Hagar is asking these days as he brings out a new line of coffee-flavored tequilas, dubbed Cabo Diablo, as part of his Cabo Wabo brand line.
Cabo Diablo weighs in at 35 percent alcohol by volume and has, according to the brand's Facebook page description, the "sweet, bold essence of Arabica coffee, vanilla and dark cocoa...blended with 100 percent blue agave Cabo Wabo tequila from the highlands of Jalisco. The result is an unquestionable smoothness, balanced with the mischievous bite of tequila."
It's currently available in five states -- New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Connecticut and Wisconsin -- with plans to expand. Hagar sold Cabo Wabo to Gruppo Campari for a reported $80 million in 2007 but remains on its board of directors and has since started making Sammy's Beach Bar Rum. He tells us that he has no plans to dish off the rum brand like he did with the tequila, however:
"I didn't plan on selling the tequila, but I got over my head. But now I know what I'm doing a little more. Now I can see kind of what you can and what you can't do. And I've got people...Like, when I built the tequila, none of us knew what we were doing. So now I got a guy from the liquor industry running the rum, and he knows what he's doing and we got another couple of guys involved who know what they're doing. So now I think I can keep my arms around it."
On the music tip, Hagar released the guest-filled "Sammy Hagar and Friends" in September and next performs with his band, the Wabos, on November 7 at Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Fla.
