Following the passing of the iconic Lou Reed over the weekend, several of Rock and Roll’s most notable have made it their mission to pay tribute to the man who undoubtedly inspired so many of them.
Artists such as Motorhead, Billy Idol, KISS’s Paul Stanley, Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea, Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, and many, many others took to their social media sites to express their sorrow and disbelief at the loss of the Velvet Underground legend.
“Haven't really accepted the reality of the loss of Lou Reed. Still trying to process it. Denial I guess,” wrote former GNR guitarist Slash on his official Twitter page.
My Morning Jacket led a performance in Reed’s honor at Neil Young’s annual Bridge School Benefit on Sunday evening, playing VU’s “Oh! Sweet Nuthin’” alongside Young, Elvis Costello and Jenny Lewis, among others.
Also on Sunday night, during a concert in Baltimore, MD, Pearl Jam included a piece of Reed's solo hit "Walk on the Wild Side" at the end of their song, "Daughter," and also played the Velvet Underground song "I'm Waiting for the Man" during their encore.
Longtime friend David Bowie posted a photo of Reed and himself on his official Facebook page, writing “He was a master.” Meanwhile, Velvet Underground co-founder John Cale released the following statement about his late friend and bandmate (via Rolling Stone):
“The news I feared the most, pales in comparison to the lump in my throat and the hollow in my stomach. Two kids have a chance meeting and 47 years later we fight and love the same way —losing either one is incomprehensible. No replacement value, no digital or virtual fill…broken now, for all time. Unlike so many with similar stories—we have the best of our fury laid out on vinyl, for the world to catch a glimpse. The laughs we shared just a few weeks ago, will forever remind me of all that was good between us.”
Lou Reed passed away on Sunday (October 27) at his home in Long Island, New York at the age of 71. Though his cause of death was initially withheld, it has since been revealed from his surgeon that Reed’s passing was a result of complications from a liver transplant surgery which he underwent in April.
