Queens of the Stone Age appeared on Letterman last week to promote their #1 new album, “…Like Clockwork.”
In the interview, Josh Homme and Dean Fertita gave inside scoop on the inspiration behind some of the band’s new record.
When it came time to decide on QOTSA’s first single from the new album, the band made an interesting choice to focus on the music and let their managers decide the single, eventually landing on “My God is the Sun.”
Homme talked about working with “workaholic” Elton John on “Fairweather Friends,” acknowledging the icon’s prowess of the piano, which he says John doesn’t get enough credit for.
Perhaps most surprisingly, though, was the news that the intro to “If I Had a Tail” was inspired by a number of pop culture touchstones from over the years, including the classic “Lady Marmalade,” Shaun Cassidy’s “Da Doo Ron Ron” and Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t Get You Out of My Head.”
“That song has such a, maybe a little bleak of an outlook, that it seemed kind of, like, cheeky to start that way,” Homme said.
Another fun piece from the interview was Homme discussing how he first learned about kalopsia, which he says is a real medical condition, in a text from the Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner. The idea stuck with him and inspired him to develop the song of the same name.
“It’s a condition wherein things appear more beautiful than they actually are,” he said, adding of Turner, “And he kind of just didn’t know how much he’d actually hit the nail on the head for where I was at at the time.”
The guys also talked about working with Boneface, the reclusive British artist who created the animation for their song previews, which the band rolled out on Youtube prior to the album’s release.
