When given the choice between continuing your education or pursuing music, it’s understandable that most of the rockers we know and love choose the latter and ended up dropping out of high school or college. However, it might surprise you to know which rockers from your favorite bands stuck with it and earned a college degree. In honor of graduation season, we give you five rockers who took the message “stay in school” to heart and graduated with college degrees:
1. Dexter Holland
Almost a Ph.D, lead singer of The Offspring, Dexter Holland, has the best scholarly credentials on this list. The punk vocalist has earned a Bachelor’s as well as a Master’s degree in Molecular Biology from the University of Southern California. Holland was well on his way to earning a doctorate before deciding to focus on The Offspring instead.
2. Tom Morello
Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine has some serious credentials to back up his well-known political activism. The guitarist graduated from Harvard University with a degree in Political Science (with honors, no less) in 1986.
3. Rivers Cuomo
With his signature thick glasses, it might not be surprising that Weezer’s frontman is also a Harvard graduate intellectual. Cuomo graduated from the Ivy League school in 2006 with a Bachelor’s degree in English.
4. Gene Simmons
Not many realize that before he was the fire-breathing, tongue flashing frontman of KISS, Gene Simmons was a simple junior high school teacher. Simmons earned a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Richmond College in Staten Island, NY before becoming a 6th grade teacher at PS 75 in Spanish Harlem.
5. Jim Morrison
The infamous Doors frontman Jim Morrison was always an intellectual, reading and writing poetry throughout his life and having a genius-level IQ of 149! The Lizard King earned a degree in Film from UCLA in 1965.
